William Tecumseh Sherman

General Sherman was a civil war hero and later U.S. military chief on the High Plains.  He concurred with Cavanaugh's judgment on Native Americans, "The more we can kill this year, the less will have to be killed the next war," he said.  He also added, "they all have to be killed or be maintained as a species of paupers."
