Colonel John M. Chivington

Chivington, a former minister who turned down a military chaplaincy to become a fighting soldier, made his place in history by leading the infamous Sand Creek Massacre of Cheyenne's in 1864.  "I am fully satisfied," he had written, "that to kill the red rebels is the only way to have peace and quiet."
