Samuel Tappan

Tappan, an abolitionist during the Civil War, transferred his egalitarian passions to the Native Americans after Appomattox.  He was president of a military commission that censured Chivington for the Sand Creek Massacre and in 1867, was in the presidential Peace Commission that negotiated the Medicine Lodge Treaty.
