Wendell Phillips

Phillips, another former abolitionist, became a fiery advocate of Indian rights.  He demanded that the U.S. abandon the transcontinental railroad and give the Indian, "a department in the Cabinet which shall watch his rights."  A war-hawk editorial in The New York Times blasted him for his "sickly" sentimentality.
