Chief Joseph

Chief Joseph of the Nez Perces in Oregon preached forbearance:  "Better to live in peace than to begin a war and lie dead."  His tolerance was futile.  Driven off their land, the tribe under Joseph tried to flee to Canada, fighting off pursuing cavalry.  Close to the border, the tribe was finally cut off, and Joseph surrendered.
